Symptoms

When launching Microsoft Word, you see one of the following:

  • no Translator’s Workbench toolbar appears
  • more than one Translator’s Workbench toolbar appears
Explanation

When Microsoft Word is launched, the Translator’s Workbench toolbar is attached to it with the global Translator’s Workbench template, TRADOS8.dot, which by default resides in the Word Startup folder.

Only one such template file should be in the Word Startup folder. If the file is not there, then the Translator’s Workbench toolbar will not appear in Word. If there is more than one, multiple toolbars will appear.

Resolution
To fix this:

  1. Close Microsoft Word and Translator’s Workbench.
  2. Click Start and choose Search > Files or Folders to locate the Translator’s Workbench template file TRADOS7.dot or TRADOS8.dot
  3. There should be only two of these files on your system:
    • One is in the Translation Tools installation folder
      • for Windows XP – C:\Program Files\SDL International\T2007_xxx\TT\Templates
      • for Windows VistaC:\Template
    • The other is in the Word Startup folder(s), C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Startup (for Windows XP) or C:\Program Files(x86)\Microsoft Office\Office11\Startup (for Windows Vista) by default. If you have Word 2000 or later running on Windows 2000 or later, the template may also be located in the user-dependent Startup location C:\Documents and Settings\(your user name)\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP
    • If you don’t see Application Data folder in your Documents and Settings, it is because this folder if hidden. To make it visible go to Tools > Folder Options in Windows Explorer and on the View tab, select the Show hidden files and folders radio button.
  4. Delete all the occurrences of TRADOS8.dot except those in the Translation Tools installation folder and the Word Startup folder.
    • If TRADOS8.dot is not found in the C:\Documents and Settings\(your user name)\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP folder, copy it there from C:\Program Files\SDL International\T2007_xxx\TT\Templates.
    • For Windows 10, 64 bit and MS Office 2010, copy the file into: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\STARTUP
  5. Restart Microsoft Word. Only one toolbar should appear. Отворете MS Word. Ще ви се отвори прозорец, който ще пита дали искате да се доверите на новия макрос. Изберете Always trust macros from this publisher и натиснете на Enable Macros.

If, after the above procedure, the Translator’s Workbench toolbar is still not present in Microsoft Word, check the Word Startup folder location as follows:

  1. In Microsoft Word, go to Tools > Options and click on the File Locations tab.
  2. Select the Startup item. The path to the right tells you the Startup folder location on your system. You can also click Modify to see the full path.
  3. Copy the TRADOS8.dot template to this location.
  4. Close and relaunch Microsoft Word. The TRADOS8.dot template should be automatically activated.

The user-dependent Startup location in Windows Vista is: C:\Users\[USERNAME]\Appdata\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\Startup

If the toolbar is still not appearing in Microsoft Word then you may need to reset the Word registry entry. Using the Windows registry is at your own risk. Any unwanted changes can not be made undone and may harm the software on your machine. Please follow these instructions for Word 2003:

  1. Close all Microsoft Office programs
  2. Go to Start > Run
  3. Type regedit in the box, the Windows Registry Editor will appear
  4. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word
  5. Delete the Data folder
  6. Close the registry editor

Please note, for other Word versions you will need to select the relevent folder. To check your version open Microsoft Word and go to Help > About:

  • Folder 11.0 is for Word 2003 users only.
  • If you are using Office XP then you will need the 10.0 folder.
  • If you are using Office 2007 then you will need the 12.0 folder.
Note
The procedure described in this article also applies to the previous Translator’s Workbench 2.x, 3.x, 5.x, 6.x and 7.x templates: tw4win97.dot, tw4win2k.dot, trados5.dot, trados6.dot or trados7.dot respectively.
